Andy Murray is set to compete in the third round of the US Open today after defeating the Argentinian world number 24 Francisco Cerundolo in three sets in the first round and the American wildcard Emilio Nava in four sets for the second round.
Outside of Wimbledon, this is the first time Murray has reached the third round of a Grand Slam since returning from his hip injury and has praised his coach, Ivan Lendl, for the winning mentality.
He has won just two matches in a Major since Wimbledon 2021 but his determination to continue was highlighted when he reunited with his former coach earlier this year.
This is now the first time in six years the Scotsman has reached the last 32 of the US Grand Slam and Murray will now face the Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini.
Speaking after his match, Murray said of his coach: “There is a lot of belief in the relationship because of the results we have had in the past.
“I know that if I play a game-style that he wants me to then that will bring me success. So, I trust that.”
