A number of the richest men in the world have all pledged their interest in buying the recently for sale Chelsea Football Club.

Roman Abramovich has recently had to put his beloved football club up for sale following Russia’s recent unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which has meant the European Union and United Kingdom have put sanctions on a large number of Russian oligarchs with suspected links to Putin and his government.

The sanctions have now had their impact on the billionaires, and Chelsea FC are now unable to sell any more match tickets or merchandise, and will not be able to buy or sell players on the transfer market.

The government’s initial sanctions would also mean the club would not be up for sale, but it is now understood that the 55-year-old oligarch would be able to apply for a special licence whereby he could sell the club, providing he can prove he would not benefit from its sale.

In his initial statement announcing his selling of the Blues side, the Russian-Israeli said the proceeds of the club’s sale would be donated to victims of war.

As of Wednesday 9 March 2022, there appeared to be around 20 credible interested parties looking into buying the side.

He and his younger brother Christian first started the business in 1995, starting out by buying a flat in Earl’s Court, London on a £6,000 loan and turned it into a £50,000 profit within 18 months.

Candy and his brother continued to make high profile developments throughout the 2000s some of which include One Hyde Park, NoHo Square and the Chelsea Barracks.

Candy recently put his own penthouse in One Hyde Park up for sale at £175m.

While the brothers run separate businesses, they have continued to collaborate.

“Any bid would be made in conjunction with another party, or consortium, and we have serious interest from several international partners.

“Mr Candy has a huge affinity with Chelsea. His father was asked to play for the club and he has been watching matches at Stamford Bridge since the age of four.

“The club deserves a world-class stadium and infrastructure and Mr Candy’s unique expertise and background in real estate would be a hugely valuable asset to delivering this vision.”
