The alternative destinations in Europe perfect for a romantic Valentine's weekend away - that aren't Paris or Rome
Instead of heading to the usual romantic spots in Europe for a Valentine’s weekend away, why not travel to an alternative destination?
Founder of agency Palm PR, Emily Keogh, says “we’re seeing a real shift this Valentine’s Day away from classic ‘tick-box romance’ like Paris and Rome, and towards destinations that feel more atmospheric and lived-in.” She adds: “Barcelona is emerging as a standout alternative, inviting couples to slow down, get lost and discover things together, whether that’s wandering the shadowy lanes of the Gothic Quarter, lingering over vermouth in a hidden bar, or sharing late-night tapas.
“Staying at Kimpton Vividora Barcelona puts couples right in the heart of that experience — it’s romance with edge, energy and authenticity, which is exactly what modern couples are looking for.”
There are many destinations to travel to that are often over-looked but classed as ‘dupes’ to the likes of Paris and Rome. For example, CEO and Co-founder Hotelplanner.com, Tim Hentschel shares his destination dupes for Valentine’s breaks.

Instead of Paris: Lyon, France. Often called the "Gastronomic Capital of the World," Lyon offers the same cobbled streets and riverside walks as Paris but with a focus on world-class food. Explore the hidden Renaissance passageways for a truly romantic city adventure.
Instead of Rome: Verona, Italy. Verona is the setting of Romeo and Juliet, after all – it’s smaller, cleaner and incredibly walkable. You can share a glass of Valpolicella in the shadow of the Roman Arena without the chaotic bustle of the capital. Take the funicular or stroll up to Castel San Pietro.
Instead of Venice: Annecy, France. Known as the "Venice of the Alps," this town features turquoise canals fed by a crystal-clear lake and set against snow-capped mountains. It is arguably more picturesque and much fresher in February. You can take a romantic cruise on Lake Annecy and the surrounding peaks are capped with snow.
Try Lanzarote: Just over four hours from major European cities, Lanzarote’s warm winter climate and elemental beauty provide the perfect setting for an off-season escape focused on connection, stillness and shared experience. Lanzarote’s favourite design-led retreat, Hotel César Lanzarote, invites couples to slow down and celebrate love in a setting where nature is raw, elemental, and deeply magnetic. Surrounded by volcanic terrain and the Atlantic horizon, the boutique 20-key hotel provides a serene and intimate backdrop.
