Violent scenes outside Madison Square Garden after NBA Finals party cancelled ahead of New York Knicks vs San Antonio Spurs game

Violent scenes erupted outside Madison Square Garden after an NBA Finals party was cancelled ahead of the New York Knicks vs San Antonio Spurs game.

A cancelled party to watch an NBA Finals game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs sparked violent scenes outside Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night (June 10).

Fans were gathering at the legendary venue to watch the match-up - which ended in a record comeback for the Knicks - when the event was cancelled. No further details of the cancellation were revealed, but police were later called to reports of a violent confrontation in the city.

Onlookers said tensions briefly flared outside the arena, with minor scuffles breaking out among fans gathered near the venue, prompting the police response. Videos from the scene showed confrontations between fans and officers as crowds remained outside Madison Square Garden.

Several people were detained following the disturbance, police said.

Meanwhile, inside the arena, the Knicks produced the biggest comeback in NBA Finals victory to triumph 107-106, with Jalen Brunson landing 36 points as the Spurs blew a 29-point lead.

The win was secured by London-born OG Anunoby, who claimed a tip-in basket with just 1.2 seconds left of the final quarter to win it for the Knicks, sending the iconic arena into a frenzy of celebration.

The win, watched by the likes of Taylor Swift and Timothee Chalamet, puts the Knicks in a good position to scoop their first title since 1973 as they head to Texas for game five, which gets underway at 1.30am UK time on Sunday morning.
