In series one, he is caught up in a criminal underworld in Amsterdam while trying to track a missing sex worker.
The show packed a whole lot of crime and suspense - from human trafficking to Romanian gangsters, stalkers and murder.
Despite the promising like up of actors, writers and productions, the series received mixed reviews and it was questioned whether Baptiste would return.
What will happen in the second series?
***Series two spoiler alert***
The second series sees Baptiste return as a broken man, following a personal tragedy.
In the six-part drama, he takes on the case of a missing family in Hungary. The series was filmed in the country’s capital, Budapest.
He has isolated himself from his family, pushed his wife Celia out and attempts to immerse himself in a new case.
The missing persons are the husband and two sons of Emma Chambers, the British Ambassador to Hungary.
The series unfolds into a search for answers, not just people. Baptiste becomes increasingly suspicious of the Hungarian police force and questions the agenda of the prying media and their informants.
He must remain professional and unphased by the international focus on the missing persons, as he pursues the truth of what happened to Emma’s family.
Who is in the cast?
Tchéky Karyo will return as troubled detective Julien Baptiste, having starred in the role since The Missing.
Frenchman Karyo said of reprising the role: “I am so excited and proud of Harry and Jack for their new audacious story in Hungary.
“I can’t wait to prepare for Julien’s new adventure and for the emotions that he is about to go through. I’m looking forward to sharing this incredible journey with an amazing cast.”
He also told Gloucestershire Live that his character will return “filled with anger, bitterness, pain, and he no longer knows where’s north or south.”
“Julien’s lost; he gets aggressive, he loses his temper and brings a lot of pain to his loved ones at home,” he added.
Supporting him is English actress Fiona Shaw (Harry Potter, Fleabag) as Emma,
She said of working with the french actor and the Williams brothers: “I’m honoured to be joining this hugely talented and committed team with the superb writing of Harry and Jack Williams and under the direction of Thomas Napper,”
When will it be released?
Baptiste series two airs on Sunday, July 18 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The BBC have confirmed this will be the final season of Baptiste.
