Where is Outer Banks set?

The Netflix teen drama is set on a fictional town and island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The Outer Banks are a collection of barrier islands on the East coast of America, sitting next to North Carolina and Virginia.

The location is a popular spot for tourists in the area thanks to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which is an important biodiversity zone in the US.

Where is Outer Banks filmed?

The series is filmed south of the actual Outer Banks in Charleston, South Carolina. The scenes involving water take place on Mount Pleasant’s Shem Creek.

Other locations used are Pitt Street, Hunting Island, the Hunting Island Lighthouse and Lowndes Grove.

The Wreck, which is the restaurant Kiara works in during the series, is actually a real place in Mount Pleasant, known as the Wreck of the Richard and Charlene.

The series was originally set to film on the real-life Outer Banks area in Wilmington, North Carolina. However, Netflix decided not to film there because of the state’s House Bill 2 legislation.

The legislation, known as ‘the bathroom law’, requires transgender people to use the bathroom belonging to the sex they were assigned at birth.

The law deterred the series from shooting in the state, and so instead they chose South Carolina as second choice.

Speaking to the Wilmington Star-News, co-creator Jonas Pate said: “When we wrote it, it was 100 percent Wilmington in our heads. We wanted to film it here. But Netflix made the right decision to insist on inclusivity and we completely agree with them.”

How to watch Outer Banks season 2

The entire season will be released in one batch, allowing viewers to binge it all in one go.
