Food Shortages UK: When did The European Commission launch its Stockpiling Strategy, what is it?
The UK is reportedly drawing up plans to prepare for UK food shortages.
Should the Iran war continue into the summer, the UK is reportedly drawing up plans to prepare for food shortages in the UK. Business secretary Peter Kyle told Times Radio that “It is difficult for me, because, of course, these leaks are very unhelpful.
“But when people do read it, they need to be reassured that we are doing this kind of planning, and we are doing this kind of scenario planning.
“Bear in mind that back in Covid, Boris Johnson missed five Cobra meetings in the lead-up to it.
“I can tell you, because I’m in these meetings, the Prime Minister has been there since the very start, and he is going through personally and driving deep dives into lots of areas of resilience throughout our economy.”
Peter Kyle went on to say that “People should be reassured that we are doing this kind of action behind the scenes to keep resilience in our economy, so that when the full extent of what may or may not emerge, because this situation is still unfolding in the Middle East, you have a Government that is acting with creativity and boldness.”
In an interview with The Telegraph, Ken Murphy, the chief executive of Tesco said that he could not guarantee that shoppers would not experience food shortages this summer and said: “Can I provide guarantees? Of course, not”

He also added that “Given how quickly the situation globally changes and the volatility of the actors involved in this conflict, I think [it] would be wrong for me to give you any guarantee.
In July 2025, the European Commssion launched the Eu Stockpiling Strategy and a Medical Countermeasures Strategy under its Preparedness Union agenda.
According to the European Commission’s website, “The EU Stockpiling Strategy is designed to secure essential goods — such as food, water, oil, fuel and medicines – in the event of a crisis. It is the first ever EU comprehensive approach to stockpiling.”
“Key actions in the Stockpiling Strategy include:
- “establishing an EU Stockpiling Network with Member States to share best practices, coordinate stocks, and develop joint recommendations.
- “identifying stock gaps and duplications through information sharing and strengthening cooperation among Member States and with the EU.
- “expanding EU-level stockpiles to fill gaps in essential goods, supported by initiatives like rescEU for medical gear, shelter, generators, and more.
- “enhancing transport and logistics for rapid crisis response.
- “promoting civil-military, public-private, and international partnerships to maximise resource use efficiently and on time.”
