Christmas on BBC One means a Call the Midwife Christmas special, with this year’s episode offering a winter wedding between Lucille and Cyril, as well as the long-awaited return of Miram Margolyes as Mother Mildred.

What is it about?

The official BBC synopsis promises that this Christmas will be “a memorable one at Nonnatus House as Lucille (Leonie Elliott) and Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) prepare for their upcoming winter wedding.”

“The Nonnatus team are faced with their busiest Christmas Day ever as the Maternity Home is filled with expectant mums-to-be, each with their own challenging case. Luckily, Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) is on hand to support the team.”

Who is in the cast?

The regular cast of Call the Midwife will all be appearing the in the 2021 Christmas special.

You can expect to see Jenny Agutter, Linda Bassett, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, and Stephen McGann amongst others.

Miriam Margolyes will also be returning as Mother Mildred, after not appearing in Series 10 (presumably for Covid reasons). You’ll know Miriam Margolyes from any number of things like Harry Potter or The Age of Innocence.

When is the Call the Midwife Christmas special on TV and where can I watch it?

The 2021 Call the Midwife Christmas special will air on BBC One at 8pm on Christmas Day.

It’ll also be available to watch on iPlayer immediately afterwards.

Will there be a series 11 of Call the Midwife and when will it air?

There will! Even better, you won’t have to wait long for Series 11 of Call the Midwife to begin – the first episode will air on Sunday January 2, only eight days after the 2021 Call the Midwife Christmas Special.

It has also already been confirmed that Call the Midwife will continue through to 2024, with a twelfth and thirteenth season on the way as well.

Why should I watch it?

Because it’s an emotional drama, always popular at Christmas.
