Danny Dyer has opened up about his previous drug addiction on the How to Fail Podcast with Elizabeth Day.

EastEnders star Danny Dyer recently opened up about how he would “sit up all night smoking crack” in the early days of his career before beating drug addiction. Speaking on the How to Fail podcast with host Elizabeth Day the EastEnders actor, 46, described how he froze on stage during a Broadway show after a drug fuelled bender.

Danny Dyer explained: “I'd never been to New York, so when we transferred from the Almeida to the Lincoln centre in New York, I got very excited. Well, I took a lot of drugs out there. This is the other thing, I'd never dried up. I take it very seriously, my work, and I love it, and I strive to be better every night.

"I'd heard about people that had dried on stage, you know, because it's a massive thing and all that, and it never happened to me. I thought that I could sit up all night, smoking crack, and then walk on stage, and of course you can't f****** do that, it's a ridiculous idea.

He continued: "I've done this play so much, matinees, and I just didn't have a clue what to say. The worst thing was the other actors, who knew I'd been out, looking at me. But it was a wake up call.”

The EastEnders actor also admitted to not treating his wife very well over the years. Danny met Joanne Mas when he was just 13 and married in 2016. The couple share three children together Love Island star Dani Dyer, Sunnie and Arty.

Discussing their marriage over the years Danny said: “I do believe in the marriage vows and sickness and health and for better or worse. So it’s hard to stay in a relationship for that long with the press attention and with me being a pr**k for many years, because I was, I hold my hands up, I lost the plot for many years.”

In 2016 the actor went to rehab in South Africa and said: “I just knew I needed to change something in my life drastically.”

Danny Dyer started acting when he was just 14 years-old and was cast in an episode of Prime Suspect 3 alongside Helen Mirren. He starred in a string of movies including Human Traffic (1999), The Football Factory (2004) and Doghouse (2009) before landing the iconic role of Mick Carter in EastEnders in 2013.

Since his departure from the BBC One soap in 2022 after his character went missing at sea, fans have been begging the actor to return to the Queen Vic. Although he recently shut down all rumours he would be making a comeback as, although Mick Carter’s body was never found, according to Danny: “He’s dead.”

The actor has six upcoming projects (none of which are EastEnders) but fans will be happy to see him back as Moff in Human Traffic 2: Revolution (pre-production), the raunchy new Disney+ series Rivals and a brand new TV series Mr Bigstuff which will be available to watch on Sky in July.
