Oscar winning actor Joaquin Phoenix stars in the upcoming film Beau is Afraid.

The film is directed and produced by Ari Aster. The American has previously written and directed popular films such as Hereditary and Midsommar.

The surrealistic comedy horror sees Phoenix portray the lead character Beau, who is described as an extremely anxious but pleasant man who has a strained relationship with his overbearing mother.

The film features a star studded cast including the likes of Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone and Amy Ryan.

Beau is Afraid arrives in the United States on Friday 21 April 2023. However, an official release date has not yet been confirmed in the UK.

The film is produced and distributed by A24 films which usually reach the UK a little later than the USA. However, Azri Aster’s previous two films, both of which were A24, were released in the UK at the same time as the USA.

Who is in the Beau is Afraid cast?

Joaquin Phoenix plays the role of the lead character Beau.

The New York Times has described Phoenix as one of the most talented actors of the 21st century. Some of his most notable films include Gladiator and Joker.  Phoenix was critically acclaimed in the 2020 Golden Globes for his role in the Joker film and won the award for best actor.

Armen Nahapetian also plays the role of Beau during his younger years. The 15-year-old actor has featured on Daybreak and NCIS in the past.

The cast also features Patti LuPone who portrays the role of Beau’s mother. LuPone is best known for her roles in American Horror Story and Hollywood.

Amy Ryan of the US version of The Office and Lost Girls plays the role of Grace.

What to expect from Beau is Afraid

A24 have released a short synopsis ahead of the film’s release which reads: “A paranoid man embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother in this bold and ingeniously depraved new film from writer/ director Ari Aster.”

The exact plot of the film has not yet been revealed and it appears the makers are keeping it under wraps for the time being.
