The movie is based on the TV series Catherine Tate’s Nan, which is a set of four specials that were broadcast between 2009 and 2015 and is a spin-off from The Catherine Tate Show, to which the BBC has had to defend the character from controversy.

The movie follows Nan going on a road trip from London to Ireland with her grandson Jamie (played by Matthew Horne) to make amends with her estranged sister (played by Katherine Parkinson) who is dying.

Throughout the road trip, they come across strange encounters, like militant vegan arsonists, crazed cops on motorbikes and raucous rugby teams.

The trailer reveals flashbacks of Nan’s and Nell’s past, where it seems they fell out over a man.
