Timothée Chalamet has unveiled the first sneak peek of himself as a young Willy Wonka for the upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka.
This is everything you need to know.
What does Timothée Chalamet’s Willy Wonka look like?
Chalamet is taking on the role as a Willy Wonka that’s younger than the previous on screen iterations from Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.
On Instagram, the 25-year-old actor shared two pictures from the set, the first being a picture of himself wearing a brown tophat, crushed red velvet jacket and multicoloured patterned scarf, and the second what appears to be the brass top of a walking stick with a little present perched on top.
In the caption, Chalamet quoted the character by writing: “The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last…”
He shared the same picture of himself on Twitter, but simply captioned the tweet “WONKA” with two star emojis and a chocolate bar emoji too.
Production company Warner Bros also shared the pictures on Instagram and Twitter.
What will Wonka be about?
Details of the project are still largely unknown, but it is said that it will be based on a young Willy Wonka and his life before creating the chocolate factory.
The film has also been billed as a musical, with representatives for Chalamet reportedly confirming that he will be showcasing his singing and dancing abilities.
Paul King is directing the film, with King’s previous directorial projects including episodes of The Mighty Boosh and Come Fly with Me as well as feature films Paddington and Paddington 2.
King also co-wrote the film alongside Ghosts star Simon Farnaby.
The film already boasts a star studded cast, with Olivia Colman (The Crown, The Favourite), Jim Carter (Downton Abbey, Cranford), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Fingersmith) and Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder, Mr Bean) all set to be involved.
According to IMDb, Paterson Joseph (Vigil, Peep Show), Keegan-Michael Key (Schmigadoon!, Key and Peele), Matt Lucas (Little Britain, Doctor Who) and Rakhee Thakrar (Sex Education, Eastenders) are also set to star.
When will Wonka be released?
Currently, Wonka is slated for a theatrical release on 17 March 2023.
The film was announced earlier this year in May, and joins a number of prequel-origin story films to have been released in recent years like Cruella and Joker.
