Is Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man No Way Home? Does actor star with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in third film

Before Spider-Man: No Way Home was released, leaked images had fans hoping that the three versions of the superhero could team up together in the new movie

Before Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in cinemas, images supposedly from the set of the movie appeared to showed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their spidey suits alongside Tom Holland - and the internet promptly lost its collective mind.

Now that the film has been released, we know for sure whether the newest Spider-Man film sees the three iterations of the superhero star together.

This is what you need to know - warning: spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Before Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped in cinemas in December last year, there was one question that fans were asking: will Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield be in the film?

The release of the film confirmed that the previous two iterations of the superhero do indeed make an appearance in the movie - and it’s more than just a fleeting cameo to the delight of fans.

Erik Sommers, co-writer of the film, told Gold Derby that Maguire and Garfield could never have just been cameos in the film.

He said: “I think we knew right away that if we’re gonna do this, it can’t just be like these cameos we’re doing for cameos sake.

“The biggest reaction can’t just be, “I can’t believe they got those guys” or something like that. We need to treat them like the characters that they are, we need to honour them, we need to honour the movies they were in.

“We need to give them some sort of emotional journey, they can’t just come and just show up for this cameo and then disappear.

“We had to write up to them as characters, and that was always the goal.”

Maguire, Garfield and Holland recently got together to talk about coming together for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Talking to Deadline, Maguire said: “I was just grateful every day. Really, it was such a rich experience and, as the guys have touched on, the kind of sharing of something and the brotherhood of it. It was just so rich, emotional.”

Garfield said: “I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, “Well, I have no choice”, you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the earth. I’m a lemming for Tobey.”

He added: “Getting three Spider-Men together could go one of two ways, and I think it’s a testament to these guys that it went the way that it went, which was a brotherhood, which is just beautiful.”

When did the leak happen?

An image from a, at the time unreleased, trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home had been leaked online at the beginning of November.

While we now know that Holland, Maguire and Garfield do indeed star together, some fans weren’t quite convinced by the images - or they were just trying not to get their hopes up.

The image showed Holland, Maguire and Garfield standing together on a cruise ship at night, with them all looking pretty battered and bruised. While all three of them have their masks off, they’re all wearing slightly varying Spider-Man outfits.

One person tweeted: “I want to believe but something looks a little bit off? Perhaps it’s just the quality but Andrew’s face looks misshapen? Also, as someone pointed out, Tom’s stance is similar to after he kills Mysterio in [Far From Home].”

Another wrote: “Tobey’s hair never looked like that in the og trilogy so if it is faked whoever made it is a master at editing.”

Prior to its release, Marvel also hinted at the returns of villains from Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Man eras in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Alfred Molina (Maya and the Three, Solar Opposites) returns as villain Doc Ock from Maguire’s Spider-Man 2, and Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained, Soul) as Electro from Garfrield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

A tiny glimpse of the Green Goblin could also be seen in the poster for the film, which was released on Monday 8 November, foreshadowing Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse, The Card Counter) reprising the role from the 2002 Spider-Man film with Maguire.

When was Spider-Man: No Way Home released?

Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Tom Holland, Zendaya, John Favreau, Jacob Batalon and Marisa Tomei all reprise their roles from previous Spider-Man films.

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, What If…?) also joins the cast as Doctor Strange from the Avengers franchise.
