What is Murder in Provence about?

Murder in Provence follows Antoine Verlaque (Roger Allam), a chief magistrate in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Antoine lives with his partner Marie (Nancy Carro), who is a criminal psychology professor.

Life is pretty great for the pair as they spend their days in the sunny south of France.

But all of that comes crashing down when a prestigious professor is murdered just before he was due to retire and annouce his predesseor.

At first Antoine doesn’t believe murder could take place in such a perfect setting - but it soon becomes clear that someone had it in for the academic.

Who stars in Murder in Provence?

Roger Allam (Endeavour, Game Of Thrones) is the main star of the new series.

The 68-year-old plays a quick-witted judge who discovers there has been a murder in his idylic home town.

Nancy Carrol (The Crown, Father Brown) plays Marine Bonnet, Antoine’s romantic interest in the show.

Her relationship with Antoine is a focal point of the series, as their turbulent romance often gets in the way of the murder mystery.

There are a couple of antagonistic characters including one played by Patricia Hodge (Miranda, Jemima Shore Investigations).

She has been cast as Florence Bonnet who is Marine’s mother.

Florence disapproves of Antoine as she believes he is not good enough for her daughter.

Another bad guy is played by Geff Francis (Zastrozzi, Queen and Country)stars as Francois Rousell, a police man who is not liked by the other characters.

Other notable actors are Kirsty Bushell (Eastenders, Really) who plays Antoine’s assistant and Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman, Every Other Weekend) plays Helene Paulik, Antoine’s friend.

Is Murder in Provence a true story?

The series is not based on a true story, but it has been adapted from the books of M.L. Longworth by Downton Abbey writer Shelagh Stephenson.

Episode one of Murder in Provence is based on the second novel in the series - ‘Murder in the Rue Dumas.’

There are nine books in the series so there is plenty of material for further seasons of the show.
