Andy Burnham jokes about spotting traitors ahead of historic Gogglebox appearance

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has joked about spotting traitors in politics as he prepares to join Steve Rotheram for a special charity edition of Gogglebox.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has joked that politicians know a thing or two about identifying traitors as he prepares to make television history with an appearance on Channel 4's Gogglebox.

The Labour leader, who replaced Sir Keir Starmer in Downing Street in July, will become the first serving prime minister to appear on the hit show when he joins a special Stand Up To Cancer episode on Friday night.

And with BBC hit The Celebrity Traitors gripping viewers across the country, Mr Burnham believes his political experience would give him a distinct advantage in Claudia Winkleman's castle.

Asked what he made of the programme, he said: "Well, obviously, I would say that politicians have got a lot to offer to those who are looking for tactics in relation to The Traitors."

He added: "I think we can spot faithfuls and traitors a mile off. Our profession teaches us to do that, but it's a great programme.

"It's a great example of how strong British broadcasting is, and of course the BBC."

The comments come from a Prime Minister who knows all about the cut and thrust of Westminster politics, having taken power after more than a year of plotting to replace his predecessor.

For his Gogglebox debut, Mr Burnham will be joined on the Downing Street sofa by his long-standing friend Steve Rotheram, the mayor of the Liverpool City Region.

A promotional trailer shows the pair discussing their favourite crisps and snacks inside No 10, with Mr Burnham revealing a particular fondness for Twiglets.

The politicians will join celebrities including comedian Joe Lycett and the Sugababes in reviewing the week's biggest television moments.

Mr Burnham has previously shown his lighter side in social media videos, including ranking pub snacks and answering questions about his political career while standing on a stepladder.

And he insisted there was nothing wrong with bringing a little humour to the country's highest political office.

"I make no apology for trying to lead with a bit of lightness at times, a bit of humour," he said.

"That's the way I go at things and connect with people as best I can."

He explained that supporting the cancer charity campaign was the main reason for taking part, adding: "And perhaps if a few more people watch it tonight and then support Stand Up To Cancer, that will be job done."

Mr Burnham is not the first politician to try his hand at Gogglebox. Nigel Farage appeared in a spin-off in 2014 when he was Ukip leader, while former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn took part in 2017.

A spokesman for Reform UK said Mr Farage would happily appear again.

The Gogglebox Stand Up To Cancer special airs on Channel 4 at 9.05pm on Friday, October 23.
