An arbitration decision has ordered Kevin Spacey and his production company to pay the studio behind House of Cards millions of dollars in damages.

The decision, made final on Monday (22 November), rules the payment as a result of losses incurred by Spacey’s firing for alleged sexual misconduct.

Arbitrators found that by engaging in “certain conduct in connection with several crew members in each of the five seasons that he starred in and executive produced House of Cards,” Spacey violated his contract’s demand for professional behaviour

Here is everything you need to know about it.

How much does Spacey have to pay?

The arbitration decision ordered Spacey and his production company to pay the studio behind House of Cards more than $30m (£22m).

The document says that Spacey’s firing from House of Cards cost the studio behind the hit Netflix drama - MRC - tens of millions in losses.

Following the actor’s departure, production was halted on the show’s sixth series, and had to undergo rewrites to remove Spacey as central character President Frank Underwood.

The length of the season was also shortened from 13 to eight episodes, in order to meet production deadlines.

“The safety of our employees, sets and work environments is of paramount importance to MRC and why we set out to push for accountability,“ the studio said in a statement.

The ruling comes following a more than three-year legal battle, which had been kept secret from the world’s press

Spacey is said to have appealed against the decision to a panel of private arbitrators, who ruled in favour of the plaintiffs, making the decision final and public.

Spacey, 62, is a two-time Oscar winner and was one of Hollywood’s most garlanded performers when actor Anthony Rapp made allegations against him in 2017.

He claimed he was 14 when Spacey, then 26, made a sexual advance on him in New York in 1986.

Spacey was sacked by Netflix from his job on House Of Cards, and Sir Ridley Scott erased him from his completed film All The Money In The World, with the resulting re-shoots costing millions of pounds.

Spacey said he did not remember the alleged encounter but apologised for any “inappropriate drunken behaviour”.

15 others then came forward alleging similar abuse, including eight people who worked on House of Cards.

In May 2021, Scotland Yard concluded its investigation into Spacey over allegations of misconduct and handed its findings to the Crown Prosecution Service.
