After two months of watching love blossoming, heads getting turned, heartbreaks, highs and lows, season seven of Love Island finally came to an end last night (Monday 23 August).

This is what you need to know about the last episode of the season - and the couple crowned the winners.

What happened in the last episode?

The last episode is a mixture of pre-recorded scenes from the villa as the islanders go about their last day, and live segments featuring host Laura Whitmore.

The girls were treated to a spa day, the couples were taught how to dance, and everyone prepared their declarations to be shared during the Love Island 2021 ball.

With the guys all suited up and the girls in stunning dresses, the islanders enjoyed their prom night, sharing their feelings for each other.

During his declaration, Toby asked Chloe if she would be his girlfriend, to which she enthusiastically said yes.

In his speech, Liam apologised to Millie for what happened in Casa Amor, stating: “I had a challenge thrown my way and I was so sorry for what I had done.

“Seeing you distraught… I never want to see you that way ever again.”

After putting their new found dancing skills to use, all the couples ended the night by jumping fully clothed into the pool, as is tradition.

Eventually we found out the results of the public vote, and Whitmore also took each couple through their Love Island journey, with a montage from the past two months.

During their interview with Whitmore, Liam popped the girlfriend question to which Millie said yes.

Who won?

Millie and Liam were crowned as the winners of the 2021 run of the dating show.

During the split or steal segment of the show, which see’s one person in the couple win £50k and given the option to take the money for themselves or split it with their partner, it was Millie that found herself with the £50k envelope.

She didn’t take long to make her decision however, quickly announcing that she came to Love Island to find love, and she would therefore be splitting the money with Liam.

The pair made history as the first ever pair of bombshells to win the show. Bombshells refer to people who enter the villa over the course of the show and not at the beginning - usually in an attempt to spice things up and get heads turning.

After being crowned the winners, the official Love Island Twitter account shared a message from the two.

Millie said: “We cannot believe we’ve just been crowned the winners of Love Island! Thank you so much everybody who voted, for us it means the world.

“We’ve had literally the summer of our lives, and we’re going to leave here and explore our future together, we can’t wait, can we?”

Liam replied: “Thank you everyone, we’re leaving together and going to continue our journey, so thank you!”

Kaz and Tyler came in fourth, Teddy and Faye in third and Chloe and Toby in second place.

What has the reaction been like?

While the winners are chosen through a public vote, the crowning of Millie and Liam has proved controversial on Twitter.

Throughout the run of the series, many took to the social media platform to share their thoughts during the episodes, reacting to dramatic moments and making memes out of the islanders.

For the most part, users had been pushing for Kaz and Tyler or Chloe and Toby to win the show, and after the winners had been revealed, they were not happy.

“The category is: robbed couples #LoveIsland,” one person Tweeted, with pictures of Chloe and Toby, Kaz and Tyler, and Siannise and Luke from the Winter Love Island series in 2020.

Another wrote: “The best couples are always the runner ups anyway. Chloe and Toby are in good company #LoveIsland”, with pictures of past islanders Molly Mae and Tommy, Camilla and Jamie, Siannise and Luke, and Alex and Olivia.

“Imagine you cheated on national tv and still got £25k at the end of it?” wrote another, referring to Liam’s antics during Casa Amor where he repeatedly kissed other girls, while Millie stayed loyal at the main villa.

Many Twitter polls also told a different story in terms of what order the couples would have ended up in.

A poll from previous Love Island winner Amber Gill, which saw over 88,000 people vote, had Chloe and Toby as the winners with 39.2 per cent of votes, Kaz and Tyler second with 31.1 per cent of the votes, Liam and Millie in third place with 21.3 per cent of the votes, and Faye and Teddy in last place, with 8.4 per cent of votes.
