RuPaul: who is Drag Race UK host, what are their pronouns, are they married - and when is season 4 out?

RuPaul is an American drag megastar who found fame in the UK when their show RuPaul’s Drag Race was approved for a British version.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will return this month with RuPaul back as the lead judge and host.

Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and Graham Norton will also return as celebrity judges and be joined over the weeks by guest judges including Sex Education’s Hannah Waddingham.

What are RuPaul’s pronouns?

RuPaul has expressed indifference to pronouns, writing in his autobiography: “You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don’t care! Just as long as you call me.”

RuPaul identifies as a man and has previously said that he only dresses as a woman when he is getting paid. Drag queens generally, although not always, are men who dress up as women.

For the purposes of consistency, in this article, the pronoun he will be used to refer to RuPaul.

Who is RuPaul?

RuPaul is a drag queen, or in his words ‘queen of drag’, TV judge, singer, model and actor who is best known for hosting RuPaul’s Drag race and its spinoffs.

The 61 year old was born in San Diego, California, and studied performing arts in Atlanta, Georgia.

He rose to fame as a drag queen with the release of his debut single Supermodel (You Better Work), before hosting his own talk show, The RuPaul Show, in 1996.

In 2009, the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race was launched in the US - he has also worked on versions of the show in Canada and the UK, as well as the spinoff shows All Stars and Celebrity Drag Race.

He also hosted the game show Gay for Play and starred in the Netflix series AJ and the Queen.

RuPaul has been active in promoting voter registration in the US, where one in five LGBT adults are not registered to vote.

Is RuPaul married?

Yes, RuPaul is married to 49 year old rancher Georges LeBar - the pair tied the knot in 2017.

LeBar previously worked in the fashion and design industry and the pair met in 1994 at the Limelight nightclub in New York City.

The couple have an open marriage - RuPaul told Vogue “I love him too much to try to put shackles on him.

“Love is free. It’s not that sort of romantic surface thing we all bought into. He is my most favourite person that I’ve met.”

When is season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK out?

Season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK was confirmed in October 2021 and will begin airing on BBC Three on Wednesday 22 September at 9pm.

There are 10 episodes in the season and they will be released at the same time weekly.
