Vikings: Valhalla, a new historical drama about Vikings, is coming to Netflix on Friday 25 February 2022.

The series is both a spinoff and a sequel to the popular historical drama Vikings, which aired from 2013 to 2020.

What is it about?

Vikings: Valhalla is a historical drama about Vikings. It’s set a hundred years after its parent series, and finds Norse society torn asunder by religious conflict – brewing alongside their political conflict with the English were deep societal changes, and now the Vikings are fighting amongst themselves over their existing Pagan and newfound Christian beliefs.

The series follows Leif Eriksson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir and Harald Hardrada (each real figures from history) on an epic journey from their Danish island homes to England and beyond, charting a fight for survival that eventually leads to the infamous Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

Who is in the cast?

Sam Corlett stars as Leif Eriksson, a real-life Viking most famous for “discovering” America five hundred years before Christopher Columbus. Corlett is best-known for appearing in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as Caliban.

Laura Berlin stars as Emma of Normandy, who was queen of England, Denmark, and Norway. Berlin is a prolific actor in Germany, though Vikings: Valhalla is likely to be her first prominent role among English-speaking audiences.

Bradley Freegard, a Welsh actor best known for appearances in Teulu and Eastenders, will play King Canute the Great. Freegard is married to Eve Myles, who’s best known for roles in Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher and Torchwood.

The series also stars Frida Gustavsson (The Witcher), Caroline Henderson (Julestjerner), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones), and David Oakes (The Borgias) amongst others.

Vikings: Valhalla was written and created by Jeb Stuart, best known for his work on the original Vikings series and for writing the screenplay for Die Hard.

When and how can I watch it?

How is it connected to Vikings? Does it have anything to do with The Last Kingdom?

Vikings was a television drama that ran from 2013 to 2020. It, like Vikings: Valhalla, was about a number of different historical Norse heroes. Vikings: Valhalla is a spinoff/sequel to Vikings.

Somewhat confusingly, though, Netflix actually has another series about Vikings debuting soon. The Last Kingdom, which began on BBC Two in 2015 but moved to Netflix with its third season in 2018, will be returning for a fifth season in March 2022.

So, if you like, Vikings is Star Trek, Vikings: Valhalla is Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Last Kingdom is Battlestar Galactica.
