Nearly two years after it was confirmed to be happening, the fourth series of crime drama Top Boy has an official release date.

Top Boy season 4 will be available to watch on Netflix from Friday 18 March 2022. Ashley Walters and Kano both return as Sully and Dushane.

What is it about?

Top Boy is a crime drama about some local drug dealers who start getting caught up in a much higher stakes, much more dangerous world of grand scale organised crime. They clash with rival gangs and the law as they try to hold onto their place as top of the food chain.

The third series ended with a series of cliffhangers, leaving one character possibly dead and two others revealed to have secret motivations far beyond what they’d revealed so far.

Series 4 is confirmed to see the regular characters clash with a new gang from Liverpool.

Who will be in the cast?

Ashley Walters will be reprising his role as Dushane Hill. Walters is a prolific actor, having appeared in Grange Hill, Bulletproof, Doctor Who, Silent Witness, Cuffs, and The Aliens.

Kane Robinson will also return as Gerald ‘Sully’ Sullivan. You’ll likely know him better, though, for his music career as Kano – he’s widely acknowledged as one of the pioneers of grime music.

Musician Little Simz – who first joined the cast when the show was revived by Netflix – is also expected to reprise her role as Shelley. Simz has played herself in Venom 2, and will have a lead role in Amazon’s adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s The Power.

New cast members for series 4 include Howard Charles (Shadow and Bone, Whitstable Pearl) as Curtis, member of a rival gang from Liverpool, and Dan Connolly (Harlots) as Tim Braithwaite.

When is it on and how can I watch it?

Top Boy Season 4 will be released on Netflix on March 18 2022. The full series will be available to stream at once.

The return of the crime drama has been delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic – it was initially set to start shooting in May 2020, though it wasn’t until December 2020 that the series was able to go before cameras.

Top Boy season 3 was released in 2019, which was itself six years after Top Boy season 2 had aired on Channel 4.

How many episodes will Top Boy season 4 be?

Top Boy season 4 will be eight episodes. The two Channel 4 seasons (since renamed Top Boy: Summerhouse) were four episodes each, the third series on Netflix was 10 episodes.

It’s possible that this slightly reduced run was due to complications caused by the coronavirus, which saw many other shows in a position where they were unable to complete as many episodes (though we don’t necessarily know either way).
