The BBC’s latest crime thriller, The Tourist, is set in the Australian outback.

Starring Jamie Dornan, The Tourist is about an amnesiac man who finds himself in Australia with no memory of who he is, how he got there – or why people are trying to kill him. It arrived on HBO Max in the US on March 3 2022.

Here is everything you need to know about where The Tourist was filmed.

Where was The Tourist filmed?

Most of the filming for The Tourist took place in Adelaide, which is a city in the South of Australia.

There was also a lot of filming done in the surrounding areas of Port Augusta, Quorn, and Peterborough.

Some scenes were also shot in the Flinders Ranges mountains. The petrol station which The Man visits in The Tourist was built there specially by the production team.

Filming in Australia presented a number of challenges – director Chris Sweeney explained that, because of the number of flies in the Australian outback, the production had to pay large sums of money to digitally remove them from the shot.

Who is in the cast of The Tourist?

Jamie Dornan plays the eponymous tourist, an amnesiac trying to work out why people are trying to kill him.

Dornan has previously appeared in television series such as Once Upon A Time and The Fall, as well as films Robin Hood and Belfast, but he’s best known for playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies.

Australian actor Danielle Macdonald (Unbelievable) is playing Helen Chambers, a local police officer assigned to help Dornan’s character throughout.

The cast also includes Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Missing), and Alex Dimitriades (The Cry).

Hugo Weaving was initially attached to the project, but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts. He was replaced by Damon Herriman (Mindhunter).

Where can I watch The Tourist?

The Tourist airs on BBC One at 9pm on Sundays. The series is six episodes long, and every episode is currently available on iPlayer as a boxset.

In the US, it’ll be available on HBO Max in 2022.

Where can I read a review of The Tourist?

Right here! We recently reviewed The Tourist and said that it “is appreciably off-kilter [with] this wry comic sensibility throughout, much more recognisable as a black comedy than any kind of action thriller”.

We also praised Jamie Dornan for “holding together the drama (he switches from withdrawn and contemplative to wild-eyed panic with aplomb) and rising to the comic demands of the piece nicely”.
