Who is Anne Williams?

Anne Williams was a campaigner and activist from Liverpool. She founded the Hope For Hillsborough pressure group. It eventually merged with the Hillsborough Justice Campaign group, of which Williams later became chair.

She died in 2013 at the age of 62.

What happened at Hillsborough and what did Anne Williams campaign about?

The Hillsborough disaster occurred at a football match in 1989. In an attempt to ease overcrowding outside the stadium, the police opened the gates to a standing only area of the stadium; the resulting overcrowding in the stadium lead to the deaths of 97 people and the injury of 766 more.

The police subsequently blamed Liverpool fans for these deaths, feeding the press false stories of hooliganism and drunkenness.

Anne Williams’ son Kevin was amongst those who died at Hillsborough stadium, and as a result she campaigned for an official inquiry into what happened that day.

Who is involved in The Real Anne: Unfinished Business?

The documentary is presented by Maxine Peake, who portrayed Anne Williams in Anne.

Peake meets with a number of families affected by the Hillsborough disaster.

What time is The Real Anne: Unfinished Business on and how can I watch it?

The Real Anne: Unfinished Business airs on ITV at 9pm on Thursday January 6.

It will be available to watch on ITV Hub immediately afterwards as well.

Why should I watch it?

If you watched Anne, this will be an informative coda to that series, offering some important background information to better contextualise that series.
