New channel 5Action is launching on January 19, and the centrepiece of its upcoming programming is the action and espionage drama Treadstone.
Treadstone is a spinoff of the Jason Bourne movies, looking at the covert organisation that recruited Bourne and wiped his mind.
The series began in 2019 – and, although it is only now airing on 5Action, it was cancelled in May 2020 after just one season.
What is Treadstone about?
Treadstone is about the fictional organisation of the same name from the Jason Bourne movies (starring Matt Damon).
It is an offshoot of the CIA, and uses a behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly-superhuman assassins.
The series begins in the 1970s, with an agent awoken in Soviet Russia. It then cuts to the present day, following a number of sleeper agents as they’re mysteriously awoken, exploring the consequences in a way not unlike the Jason Bourne movies.
The series filmed extensively in Budapest and was 10 episodes long.
Will there be a Treadstone season 2?
There will not be a second season of Treadstone. Though USA Network was originally very confident in Treadstone, commissioning the series without a pilot process, it ultimately opted not to renew it after the first season ended.
The series was not particularly well-received, with critics praising its action but less fond of the other aspects of its storytelling.
Why was Treadstone cancelled?
This was part of a wider change in emphasis for its parent channel, USA Network, which cancelled a number of expensive drama series that year (including The Purge, another drama based on a film), opting to focus instead on live and unscripted programmes.
Where and how can I watch Treadstone season 1?
In the UK, you can watch Treadstone series 1 on 5Action today. The Jason Bourne spinoff series is a key part of the new channel’s programming.
It is also still available on Amazon Prime currently.
