Yellowjackets has been one of the biggest word-of-mouth hits of 2022 so far; the series began in late 2021 and has picked up a huge following week on week.
The finale aired on Sunday 16 January in US, and its set to air on Sky Atlantic and Now TV in the UK on Thursday 20 January.
Here’s everything you need to know about Yellowjackets.
What is it about?
Yellowjackets is intercut between two different narratives. The first is a survival drama: a girls’ soccer team in the 1990s get a plane to fly to their next competition, but crash land in the wilderness. Stranded with no help coming, they have to learn to survive on their own.
The second follows the older Yellowjackets – some of them notably missing – in the present day. Almost 25 years later it’s clear they’re still struggling to cope with the drastic steps they had to take to survive; when someone begins to blackmail them, they’re drawn back together and forced to reckon with their past.
Who is in the cast?
Yellowjackets is really well cast – it’s one of the first things you notice about the show. The two strands of the narrative are intercut with one another, and the teenager/adult casting is genuinely seamless in each case.
Christina Ricci and Sammy Hanratty star as Misty Quigley. You’ll know Ricci from The Addams Family and The Opposite of Sex, but this is one of Hanratty’s first major roles.
Juliette Lewis and Sophie Thatcher play Nat. You’ll recognise Lewis from her Oscar-nominated turn in Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear, and perhaps have spotted Thatcher in The Book of Boba Fett recently.
Melanie Lynskey and Sophie Nélisse play Shauna. You’ll know Lynskey from Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, or perhaps Two and a Half Men and Don’t Look Up. Nélisse you might recognise from The Book Thief.
Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown play Tai. Cypress you’ll know from House of Cards, Unforgettable, and Heroes, while Brown is currently starring in the new Scream movie.
Ella Purnell (Arcane, Star Trek: Prodigy) plays Julie – who, up until the finale at least, has been conspicuously missing from the present-day scenes…
Is there a trailer?
Yes, there is, and you can see it right here.
How can I watch it in the UK?
Yellowjackets is available to watch on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
Each episode of Season 1 is available to stream on NowTV as well.
In the US, Yellowjackets is available on Showtime (where it has broken records as one of their most streamed dramas ever).
Will there be a second series?
Yes, a second series has been confirmed. It doesn’t have a specific date yet, but given Season 1 started in November 2021, it seems a reasonable assumption at the moment that Season 2 will arrive roughly around November 2022.
Yellowjackets’ creators have alluded to a five-season plan as well.
Why should I watch it?
It’s one of the most compelling original dramas of the past few years, genuinely. Just trust me, watch it!
