Thousands of WhatsApp users across the UK have reported having issues with the messaging app, with Downdetector, a site that tracks outages, showing that at 8:29am, more than 70,000 reports had been made.

This is everything you need to know.

What’s going on with WhatsApp?

A large number of users have reported issues with the app not being able to receive or send any new messages. Users are able to open the app and access their conversations, but anything beyond that doesn’t appear to be working.

Many users have been met with a message at the top of the app that says it is “connecting”, but never actually doing so.

Downdector says that 55% of reports are to do with sending messages, 40% to do with the server connection, and 5% to do with the app itself.

A spokesperson for Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, said: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages, and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”

WhatsApp is one of the biggest messaging platforms in the UK - and around the world - with more than an estimated two billion active users globally.

Is WhatsApp Web also down?

Users have also reported problems with WhatsApp Web as well, the extension that allows you to send and receive messages on the WhatsApp app on your computer.

Those trying to use WhatsApp Web appear to be getting hit with the same problem as the app, with the service unable to connect. Additionally, other users have reported problems of the QR code needed to log into the web version of the app not loading.
