The nurse, from Birkenhead, Liverpool, managed to throw six-month-old baby boy Leon out of the way who was luckily in his car seat.

She saved her son’s life just in time before a silver Mercedes and a blue Volkswagen hit her - causing life-changing injuries.

An air ambulance was called to the scene and the mum - who was still on maternity leave - was airlifted to Aintree Hospital.

Ruby sustained a shattered pelvis, her right leg has been amputated and her left leg has been fractured in multiple places.

Ruby’s sister-in-law, Chelsea Clarke, has set up a GoFundMe page in support of her recovery as Ruby is awaiting more operations and will require a long rehabilitation process.

She said: “Ruby’s injuries may leave her in need of specialist medical care which could incur extremely high private medical bills, multiple therapies and prosthetics.

“Ruby’s home also needs adjustments made to ensure she has the best possible recovery and the most smooth transition back home when she can eventually return.”

‘They are the kindest caring people there are’

Ruby, who was due to go back to work next month after giving birth, can now no longer return and will be cared for by her partner, who is also called Leon.

Chelsea added: “Her partner will also be unable to work as he will need to care for their 6 month old little boy while she stays in hospital - and even when she’s home recovering.

“They are a young couple with a young baby and a mortgage and bills to pay.

“We have set up this page to see if people want to donate anything to help them through this tragic time and take away some of the stress of this situation.

“Ruby and Leon are the kindest caring people there are. They are amazing parents and would do anything for anyone.”
