Jason Momoa: why did actor split from wife Lisa Bonet, how long were they married - and did he cheat on her?

Jason Momoa, best known for starring in season one of the hit TV series Game of Thrones has announced that he and Lisa Bonet have officially split, and will be “parting ways” in their marriage.

Who is Lisa Bonet - and when did she marry Jason Momoa?

Lisa Michelle Bonet, also known as Lilakoi Moon, is an American actress best known for her role as Denise Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby Show and its subsequent spinoff series A Different World.

As Denise, Bonet earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Following her appearance on The Cosby Show, Bonet went on to appear in other on screen roles such as Life on Mars, Ray Donovan, Angel Heart, High Fidelity and Road to Paloma.

In 1987, Bonet married American actor and singer Lenny Kravitz in Las Vegas when she was 20 and Kravitz was 23, after having met each other in 1985.

Bonet gave birth to their daughter Zoë Isabella Kravitz on 1 December 1988. She and Kravitz later divorced in 1993, with Bonet legally changing her name to Lilakoi Moon, although she continued to use the name Lisa Bonet professionally.

It was in 2004 that Bonet met her future husband Jason Momoa, who is 13 years her junior, at a jazz club in LA.

Speaking to Net-A-Porter in 2018, Bonet said: “I can’t say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met.”

Bonet and Momoa welcomed their first child together in 2007, Lola, and then their son, Nakoa-Wolf, in 2008. Momoa also became step dad to Zoë Kravitz.

In 2014, Bonet and Momoa starred together in the film Road to Paloma, which was also written and directed by Momoa. They also starred together in the TV series The Red Road as well.

It wasn’t until 2017 that Bonet and Momoa tied the knot in a private ceremony at their home in California, after over a decade of being together.

When did they announce their breakup?

On Instagram, the Game of Thrones star shared a statement announcing his and Bonet’s breakup.

He wrote: “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding - and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring.

“And so~ We share our Family news~

“That we are parting ways in marriage.

“We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~

“But so that~ are we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty.

“The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~ to be who we are learning to become…

“Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our Children.

“Teaching our Children What’s possible ~ Living the Prayer

Did Jason Momoa date Emilia Clarke?

Towards the end of 2021, Game of Thrones fans thought that Momoa was dating his on-screen wife Emilia Clarke.

Momoa, who played Khal Drogo on the show, and Clarke, who played Drogo’s wife Daenerys Targaryen, left fans confused after posting pictures together on their respective Instagram accounts at the same time.

In August of 2021, Momoa posted a picture of Clarke sitting on his lap, with the caption: “MOON OF MY LIFE. you are wonderful love u forever @emilia_clarke #smilelyeyes happy birthday benioff you handsome generous badass leo aloha j”

Clarke also posted a picture of the Aquaman star lifting her up in his arms, with the caption: “When your sun and stars rolls into town you check that he can still bench press a Khaleesi.”

However, despite the confusion, Momoa and Clarke have never publicly dated, with Momoa having been in a relationship with Bonet from the early 2000s until recently.

Clarke has largely kept her personal life under wraps, but is known to have dated American film director Charlie McDowell, actor Jai Courtney and Gotham co-star Cory Michael Smith in the past.
