Why was ASAP Rocky arrested? Arrest of Rihanna’s rapper boyfriend explained, what happened, when is court case

Rapper ASAP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Athelaston Mayers, was detained by the Los Angeles Police Department at LA International Airport regarding an incident which took place in November 2021.

Days prior to his arrest, Rocky had been photographed in Barbados with fellow musician and girlfriend Rihanna, who is pregnant with their first child together.

Why has ASAP Rocky been arrested?

According to authorities, Rocky was taken into custody at Los Angeles International Airport in connection with a shooting that occurred in Hollywood last year on 6 November.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that the rapper had been detained on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

A press release issued by the LAPD said: “On November 6, 2021, around 10:15 p.m, an argument between two acquaintances occurred in the area of Selma Avenue and Argyle Avenue, in the Hollywood Area.

“The argument escalated and resulted in the suspect firing a handgun at the victim. The victim sustained a minor injury from the incident and later sought his medical treatment.

“Following the shooting, the suspect and two additional males fled the area on foot.

“Detectives worked diligently to investigate and corroborate the reporting information which helped identify the suspect(s) involved.

“The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Rakim Mayers, a Los Angeles resident, also known as music artist A$AP Rocky.

“Early this morning (20 April), LAPD officers arrested Mayers for Assault with a deadly weapon (firearm) at the Los Angeles International Airport.

“This case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.”

Rocky’s attorney, Alan Jackson, confirmed to media outlets that the rapper had been arrested, but declined to offer any more information.

According to TMZ Rocky has been released from the LAPD headquarters after his bail was set at $550,000. TMZ has also reported that police conducted a search at Rocky’s house.

Rocky was the focus of international attention in 2019 after being detained for nearly a month in Sweden following a street brawl. He was found guilty of assault and given a “conditional sentence” that meant no additional time in jail.

Why were ASAP Rocky and Rihanna in Barbados?

Rocky and Rihanna, were photographed on holiday in Rihanna’s native Barbados, with Rocky taking part in activities like jet skiing while the heavily pregnant Rihanna was surrounded by friends and family.

The two have reportedly been dating since 2020 and are currently expecting their first child together.

After weeks of media speculation over whether Rihanna was actually pregnant, her pregnancy was finally confirmed in February when she hit the streets of New York with her baby bump on display.

Recently their relationship was subjected to rumours of cheating after a claim made on Twitter took off like wildfire.

The rumour was first posted on social media by Louis Pisano, a fashion influencer, who wrote in a now-deleted tweet that the couple had split up after Rihanna caught Rocky cheating on her with designer Amina Muaddi, who has collaborated with both Rihanna and Rocky in the past.

Pisano later redacted the claim and posted a statement apologising for causing Rihanna and Rocky “unnecessary drama”.

Pisano wrote: “I made a dumb decision to tweet some information I had recieved. I’m not going to talk about sources, blame others for a discussion that was started, etc because at the end of the day I made the decision to draft that tweet, press send and put that out with my name on it.

“So I’d like to formally apologise to all parties I involved with my actions and for my reckless tweets.”
