Marks & Spencer has said it hopes to overhaul of stores across the UK, as the retailer unveils the final stages of its newly refurbished Oxford Street flagship store.

The transformed Pantheon store, which has undergone a major refurbishment over the last few months while remaining open to customers, is being used as a blueprint for new layouts, technology and shopping experiences that could eventually be introduced across other M&S stores countywide.

Spanning almost 100,000 square feet over four floors, the flagship shop in London brings together M&S Food, Fashion, Home and Beauty under one roof. M&S says it will now play a key role in shaping the future of its stores nationwide.

The final phase of the refurbishment sees the opening of the store's upper floors today (Monday July 13), completing a project that began with the launch of the lower-ground food hall last year, followed by the womenswear and beauty departments earlier this year.

Among the new features available storewide are a made-to-order suit service in menswear, a dedicated beauty hall featuring M&S own-brand products alongside third-party beauty brands, including Korean skincare, and a redesigned home department showcasing a curated Kelly Hoppen collection within a space created by the interior designer herself.

Customers will also find digital screens offering outfit inspiration, curated playlists, bespoke scents and redesigned product displays, alongside an updated Click & Collect and payment experience.

The refurbishment forms part of M&S's wider investment strategy as it looks to modernise its stores. The retailer said successful elements trialled at Pantheon will be rolled out across other locations over time.

In London alone, M&S is currently refurbishing five more stores while opening four new locations. Across the UK, plans include two new full-line stores, 18 new food halls, four store extensions and a series of further refurbishments.

The Oxford Street project also comes ahead of the planned redevelopment of M&S's Marble Arch store, after the retailer secured government approval in 2024 to demolish and replace the building following a lengthy three-year planning battle. The proposed nine-storey development will include retail space, offices, a café and a gym.

Stuart Machin, M&S chief executive, said the Pantheon store marked a significant step in the retailer's transformation. "In 2019, we built the blueprint to modernise our Food business, and now we're taking that same approach into Fashion, Home and Beauty," he said. "We've still got a lot to do modernising our estate, with 25 years of catching up to do. But Pantheon is a big step forward."

Don’t worry if you don’t live close to the M&S flagship store, you don’t have to wait for your local store to be refurbished to shop Marks and Spencer’s products. You can shop M&S beauty, Korean skincare, the Kelly Hoppen home collection and women’s fashion via the M&S website now.
