A34 closed: Major road in Berkshire shut between M4 J13 and A4185 after multi-vehicle crash involving three HGVs
A major road in Berkshire is closed after a multi-vehicle crash.
The A34 in Berkshire is closed northbound between M4 J13 (Chieveley) and the A4185 (Chilton) due to a collision. National Highways says: “The A34 northbound remains closed following a multi‑vehicle collision involving three HGVs.
“Recovery teams are conducting a complex operation to remove the only remaining HGV, which came to rest off and adjacent to the carriageway, down an embankment. Its final position makes the recovery process significantly more challenging and slower than a standard roadside removal.
“The collision also caused significant damage to the central reservation barrier. To maintain safety, lane 2 on the southbound carriageway has been closed as a buffer zone.”
It adds: “Specialist barrier repair crews are being arranged to attend once recovery is complete. After the HGV recovery is finished and the northbound carriageway can safely reopen, lane 2 closures will remain in place in both directions to allow for barrier repairs.
“These repairs are planned to take place overnight from the 16th into the 17th of January. Throughout the day lane 2 will remain closed in both directions to protect the compromised barrier and allow engineers to carry out surveys, measurements, and essential preparation for repairs.”
Diversion Details
- From the A34 northbound, leave at the M4 junction 13 interchange.
- At the roundabout, use the 1st exit and join the M4 westbound. Follow the M4 to junction 14. At the roundabout use the 3rd exit and join the A338 (Ermin Street).
- Continue for approximately 10 miles to Wantage. Continue to a T junction with the A338 (Newbury Street/Ormond Road). Turn right and join Ormond Road.
- Follow to a further T junction with the A417 (Charlton Road). Turn right at the T junction and join the A417.
- Continue for approximately 5 miles to a roundabout at Rowstock. Use the 1st exit and join the A4130 (Abingdon Road).
- Follow the A4130 for approximately 2 miles to the A34 Milton interchange. At the roundabout, use the 1st exit to rejoin the A34 northbound
