Aldi closed: UK supermarket announces it will close all 1,000 stores for 62 hours - when, why, affected dates
Aldi has revealed it will shut all of its 1,000 supermarkets for 62 hours.
The shutdown will occur over Christmas. The supermarket will operate its usual trading hours until Tuesday December 23, Aldi has said.
Doors will then shut earlier on December 24, or Christmas Eve, with all branches closing at 6pm. Aldi will remain closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Stores will reopen from 8am on Saturday December 27, returning to standard hours through to December 31 on New Year’s Eve, when branches will again close early at 6pm. All stores will then shut on New Year’s Day before reopening at 8am on Friday January 2.
The chain has confirmed that opening times may vary slightly from store to store, and is advising shoppers to check their local hours online before travelling. The updated schedule comes after Aldi previously announced a three-day Christmas shutdown, with Boxing Day once again designated a full closure for all 1,000 UK branches.
Aldi has repeatedly said the decision is about giving its workforce the chance to enjoy Christmas with their families. The retailer has closed every store on Boxing Day for several years, and communications director Rebecca Heley said the move remains an important thank-you to staff who work flat-out in December.
