What day is the Coronation of Charles III on?

The ceremony will take place on 6 may 2023. This falls on a Saturday, which is a break in Royal tradition of holding coronations on the weekdays. As a result, the British public may be given an extra bank holiday in lieu on the nearest Monday.

Will a bank holiday be given for Charles III’s coronation?

It has yet to be confirmed that a bank holiday will be given for the coronation, as the occasion is not automatically marked as a public holiday. Buckingham Palace has said that a confirmation on this will come in due course.

There are fears from some that additional bank holidays in the past year - including that given for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and her funeral - has contributed to a decline in GDP. The bank holiday for the Jubilee was blamed for the dip in GDP in June.

However, many politicians have backed the proposed holiday, including Jacob Rees-Mogg, who told the Telegraph that he expects Charles III’s coronation to be marked by a public holiday. He said: "The coronation is an important symbolic act with constitutional resonance about the stability of our system. To have a day off for that is perfectly reasonable and the effect on growth will not be enormous."

Many businesses - including supermarkets - chose to close on the day of the Queen’s funeral, although the government said that businesses would not be obliged to give workers the day off. Therefore, if a bank holiday is given for Charles’ coronation, it may be down to each individual business whether they chose to close or cut back on staff.

What will happen on the day of the coronation?

Buckingham Palace also confirmed some details of the coronation, but said that more were to be finalised in the coming months. This includes the guest list, although it is believed that Charles will be having a scaled-back ceremony, with 2,000 guests instead of the 8,000-strong congregation that watched his mother be crowned in 1952.

The Anglican ceremony, which will be held at Westminster Abbey, will remain “deeply religious” and include traditions such as Charles being anointed with holy oil, and being given the royal orb, coronation ring, sceptre before being crowned and blessed. Although, the palace has said that the modern take on the ceremony will be more inclusive than previous ceremonies to reflect multicultural Britain.
