Shocking footage shows the moment a drunken reveller tried to ride his scooter home along a motorway following a night out.

Police have released video showing the reckless rider travelling along the middle of the A38 Aston Express in Birmingham in the early hours of Sunday 22 August.

He can be seen walking the scooter along the middle of the seven lane carriageway at one point as cars and buses hurtle by at 50mph.

Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) officers stopped the man and reported him to the relevant authorities after he had been on a night out in the city.

CMPG posted the footage on Twitter and wrote: “We are huge advocates of #modalshift & #ActiveTravel here at @CMPG.

“But scooters & the like should never be on the network, this intoxicated male on the A38M Sunday morning was stopped & reported after he found a novel but very dangerous way to get home after a night in Brum.”

One web user replied “absolutely shocking”, while another said: “Not easy to argue with stupid.”

A third put: “Very lucky not be seriously injured or killed” while another added: “The moment I saw this I was cringing. Then I saw ‘intoxicated’ and much made sense.”
