At least 10 people have been killed in a shooting incident in the town of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, Canada, with at least 25 others injured.

The incident saw six pupils of the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shot dead inside the building, while a seventh victim died while being transported to hospital from the school.

The suspected shooter’s body also was found inside the school with an apparent self-inflicted injury. They have not been publicly identified but authorities issued a shelter-in-place alert to residents describing the shooter as a “female in a dress with brown hair”.

Two other people were found dead at a residence nearby the school. Police say that they believed their deaths are connected to the incident but cannot confirm at this time.

Chief Supt Ken Floyd from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said: "We believe they're connected but we are not in a position to provide that definitively right now at this time and what that connection may or may not be."

Two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries, with as many as 25 people were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has cancelled a trip to Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference in light of the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge.

He said in a statement: “I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.

“I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens. Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.

“I have connected with Premier Eby to express my condolences, and with the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, who is coordinating the federal response. Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy.”

British Columbia Premier David Eby said: "This is a devastating and unimaginable tragedy. We can't imagine what the community is going through. But I know it's causing us to all hug our kids a little bit tighter tonight."
