From the cult Wild Rosehip Beauty Balm to the iconic cobalt blue bottles, here's why Neal's Yard Remedies remains one of Britain's best-loved natural skincare brands more than 40 years after it was founded.
The easiest way to judge a skincare brand isn't by its newest launch – it's by the products customers buy time and time again. Since opening its first shop in Covent Garden 45 years ago, Neal's Yard Remedies has built a collection of modern classics.
And part of that enduring appeal is its unmistakable identity. Those deep cobalt blue bottles have become a familiar sight in bathrooms and on dressing tables across the UK, originally chosen to protect delicate botanical ingredients from light while also giving the brand an instantly recognisable look.
The Wild Rosehip Beauty Balm, £44, is a hugely versatile product that can be used as a cleanser, nourishing face mask or intensive moisturiser. I mostly applied it as an overnight treatment whenever my skin felt a little tired or dehydrated, and I'd wake up with a noticeably softer, smoother complexion. Rich without feeling overly heavy, it melts beautifully into the skin and leaves behind a healthy glow without any greasy finish.

Brand devotees also rave about the Wild Rosehip Glow Cream, £39, and it's easy to see why. Lighter than the balm but still deeply nourishing, it absorbs quickly and leaves skin looking fresh and radiant. It creates an excellent base under make-up, never pills and gave my complexion a healthy boost without ever feeling sticky or rich. If the Beauty Balm is the intensive treatment, the Glow Cream is the dependable everyday companion.
I was equally impressed by the Geranium & Orange Hand Wash, £16, and Geranium & Orange Hand Lotion, £17. The hand wash creates a rich, creamy lather that cleanses thoroughly without leaving hands feeling dry, while the matching lotion absorbs quickly to restore moisture. Best of all, the uplifting blend of organic geranium and sweet orange essential oils lingers just long enough to feel indulgent without becoming overpowering, making this a duo I found myself reaching for several times a day.

Other hero products are well worth exploring too, especially if you're new to the brand. I particularly loved the Wild Rosehip Glow Cleansing Oil, £29, which melts away make-up before transforming into a milky emulsion when water is added and rinsing away cleanly. My skin felt comfortable rather than tight afterwards, and it's definitely a product I'll be buying again. It’s not the cheapest cleanser on the market but is worth every penny.
If you enjoy spritzing your pillow or bed linen before turning in, the Goodnight Pillow Mist, £22, is another highlight. Blending relaxing essential oils including lavender and mandarin, it creates a calming atmosphere and helps signal that it's time to switch off for the night.
Finally, I tested the Natural Defence Hand Rub, a £7 handbag essential that avoids the medicinal smell many sanitising gels have. It dries quickly, doesn't leave a sticky residue and contains moisturising ingredients to help prevent hands from drying out after repeated use. It's practical, effective and still feels entirely in keeping with the rest of the Neal's Yard Remedies collection.
After more than four decades, Neal's Yard Remedies has managed something many beauty brands struggle to achieve: staying true to its roots while continuing to feel relevant. These aren't products designed to chase fleeting trends. They're thoughtfully formulated, beautifully presented and, in the case of the Wild Rosehip Beauty Balm, genuinely deserving of their cult status. It’s also worth knowing that if you purchase from the brand’s websire and spend more than £50 you’ll receive a mystery gift!
