Eufy Omni S2 review: The best robot vacuum I’ve tested comes at a huge price

Eufy’s flagship Omni S2 is powerful, intelligent and exceptionally easy to live with, but even one of the best robot vacuums around is difficult to afford at £1,600.
It doesn't seem that long ago that I tested the Eufy Omni S1 Pro robot vacuum, which at the time was basically about as good as robot vacuums get.
It was a futuristic looking thing, with a trick mopping system, a stylish cleaning and emptying station, cutting-edge obstacle avoidance, and 8,000 Pa suction power.
You might think Eufy had set themselves an impossible benchmark, then, and the S1 would be a hard act to follow, but they've just launched the Omni S2, and the game has well and truly moved on.
Let's get one thing out of the way, though, it is staggeringly expensive. We're talking £1,599. You might find some discounts, if you're lucky, but if you want one, you're still staring down the barrel of £1,500 on a good day, especially while it’s so new.
And here's the thing - from the outside, it doesn't look all that different to the Omni S1. But its improvements are certainly more than skin deep.

It has a rather ridiculous 30,000Pa of suction, a new and improved obstacle avoidance system, automatic detangling, more powerful carpet cleaning, and it even leaves a nice fragrance as it goes.
It is, then, without any doubt, Eufy's best robot vacuum yet. But is it worth its price? And can it outclass the best rivals it has to topple?
The quick answer is yes, it's quite remarkable. Eufy has taken some of the weaknesses of the S1 and worked hard to iron them out.

What I liked about the Eufy Omni S2
The improvements over the S1 are in abundance. There are new corner brushes, and a clever split main brush, and this makes it a great device for hard floors, and a competent carpet cleaner.
Carpets are often a weakness for robot vacuums and Eufy clearly knows this, because the new S2 has a high-lift design that can get it climbing over deep pile, keeping the soggy mop away, but maintaining maximum suction. It works well, if not flawlessly.
That mop is another highlight. It's now a single cylinder mop, which is great for liquid spills, and the "Uniclean" base station does a brilliant job of cleaning the roller with warm water and hot air.
It also doses up the detergent and uses a clever ionising system to sanitise the mop surface. As bases stations go, this is about as impressive as you can get.
And then there's the obstacle avoidance. Modern AI systems are making high-end robot vacuums so much more intelligent nowadays, but Eufy has properly nailed it with its CleanMind AI system. It simply didn't put a foot wrong.
We also need to talk about the app. Eufy's app has been honed to perfection, it really is about the best in the business. There are so many customising and editing settings, so you can quickly get it to tailor the vacuum's routine to the shape of your house and your way of life.
The built-in camera on the main unit is obviously effective, but it's there solely for its own benefit - you can't tap into it and use it as a roving security camera like you can with some robot vacuums. Although, I have to say, I've never really missed that feature.

What I didn't like about Eufy's new flagship robot vacuum
The new single rolling mop is a welcome addition to the S2, and it's clearly the best cleaning method in a robot vacuum, but for reasons I can't put my finger on the S2's roller isn't great at getting deep stains out.
It has plenty of downward force, and the detergent dispenses fine, so it performs well in general use, but I've seen better performers on tough stains. Including, oddly, the S1.
I'm also not entirely sold on the fragrance system. It's a really thoughtful addition, and the cartridges last around three months - but a pack of three costs around £25, and if you're anything like me, you'll soon tire of replacing them.
Fundamentally, though, I wish it didn't cost quite so much. And the reason for that is simply that everyone needs a robot vacuum in their lives - they're marvellous time-savers. But to get one that performs so competently costs serious money, and that's a shame.

Overall verdict
Well, Eufy has done it again. I liked the Omni S1 so much I lived with it for months, even though I'd been sent countless other robots to test. And while it did have its weaknesses, the Omni S2 has more than ironed these out.
A slightly weak performance on tough stains isn't enough to put you off buying this robot vacuum because it only takes a moment to reach for a hand mop anyway.
The price obviously might be enough to put you off, but if you can afford the very best, then this is pretty much it. It's a game-changer.
