Plug-in solar kits have proved more expensive than many early adopters expected, but a new £432 bundle from City Plumbing could be a welcome step towards more affordable home energy.
The arrival of plug-in solar in the UK hasn't had the most inspiring of starts. As expected, compliant kits hit the shelves of major retailers, but prices were way beyond what early adopters were hoping for.
As an example, a basic 515 watt kit from Argos costs £599, and prices can go north of £1,000 for more powerful bundles - far beyond what we expected.
Energy company Octopus is in the midst of getting a £450 bundle ready for compliance, but it's going to be the end of September before yours arrives, and good old Amazon has a £465 kit available that's obviously selling rather well - despite a long delivery time.
But all of a sudden, there's a new contender, and it might just be the best way to buy into this money-saving tech yet.

City Plumbing, a company that's forged a reputation among DIY solar enthusiasts for being a great place to buy their kit, has just introduced a fresh set of bundles at some very attractive prices.
The compliant kits start at just £432 for a kit with two 470w solar panels, a microinverter, and a mounting system. These are the key elements you need to plug your solar into the wall legally.
There are other bundles available, but on a good day the £432 kit, which includes free delivery, should built up enough energy to save you around £100 per year - so it's a healthy return.
And, more importantly, it's a step in the right direction. When the UK government announced the proposed law change, allowing people to plug a solar kit into their home's three-pin socket, there was talk of £250 kits landing in Lidl.

That hasn't happened yet, and we're still paying more than our continental cousins are for their solar systems, but it's great to see them becoming more affordable.
Plug-in solar still has limitations, and the 800 watts we can legally feed in to our homes will only cover certain appliances, and only when the sun is shining.
But given the price of energy at the moment, every little helps. And if we can pay just over £400 to bring our bills down for the next decade and beyond, it's got to be worth doing.
