Cyber Monday - a day dedicated to online discounts - is fast approaching.

Retailers, fresh from the Black Friday bonanza days earlier, turn their attention to offering website exclusive deals in a bid to encourage people to shop online.

It provides a platform for smaller retail websites to compete with the larger chains online, in what has become a competitive market place since Cyber Monday began way back in 2005.

Here’s a more detailed look at what Cyber Monday is, its origins and when it will be taking place in the UK in 2021 - as well as some of the deals to expect this year.

What is Cyber Monday?

Often known as the online equivalent of Black Friday, Cyber Monday was set up by marketing gurus to boost sales traffic on retail websites.

The first reference of Cyber Monday was made in the United States in 2005 by Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation (NRF) in a press release.

It proved to be a big hit with retailers who were keen to grow their online presence, and takings, after Black Friday and ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

It is thought that after Thanksgiving and a weekend looking round the shops, people would make purchases online when they returned to work and made use of higher speed internet on Monday.

When is Cyber Monday 2021?

Cyber Monday takes place the Monday after Thanksgiving each year, and in turn the Monday after Black Friday.

In 2021, Cyber Monday will take place on Monday 29 November.

Thanksgiving will take place on Thursday 25 November 2021 and Black Friday - traditionally an in store sales event - will take place on Friday 26 November 2021.

What Cyber Monday 2021 deals can I expect?

Much like Black Friday, shoppers can expect big discounts on tech items such as smartphones, tablets, TVs, games consoles and more.

It will come as no surprise to know Amazon are huge players in the Cyber Monday spectacle, on top of their Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day commitments.

Deals can be had on a range of Amazon products, including Echo Dot, Ring doorbells and Fire HD tablets, in addition to TV, audio and fitness trackers in the offing.

Other UK retailers to join in on offering Cyber Monday deals include John Lewis, Currys, Argos, Very and AO, among others, including lesser known outlets.

With so many deals available, it is advised to do your research prior to purchase, compare prices, and consider whether you genuinely want the item or have misplaced FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).
