The semifinal matches of the T20 World Cup take place this week with England taking on New Zealand on Wednesday.

Both teams won four out of their five matches in the Super 12 group stage with England losing to South Africa in their last match and New Zealand losing to fellow semi-finalists Pakistan in their first match of the tournament.

England appeared to be cruising through their World Cup campaign until Saturday’s closely fought battle with South Africa which saw Eoin Morgan’s side not only lose out by 10 runs but lose one of their star batters Jason Roy to injury.

Despite solid efforts from Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone, England couldn’t match the batting efforts of South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen who was unbeaten on 94 off 60 balls.

A hat-trick from Kagiso Rabada saw the end of Eoin Morgan, Chris Waokes and Chris Jordan’s innings thus leaving them 10 short of the required 189 runs.

However, despite coming up short to the South Africans, Australia’s eight wicket win over the West Indies confirmed England’s place at the top of group 1 and therefore their entry through to the semi final.

The history books suggest that England will have the edge over New Zealand in Wednesday’s meet. The recent fixtures between the two sides have been incredibly closely fought and New Zealand will be desperate to beat England in order to rectify their 2019 World Cup loss, setting up tomorrow’s game well for a fiery meet.

New Zealand also beat tournament favourites India by eight wickets with 33 balls left highlighting their recent form in the game.

There is no doubt that England v New Zealand will be yet another exciting fixture, likely to be hanging in the balance until the very last over, however the favourites must be England as their recent scorecards against Australia, West Indies and Bangladesh have shown their skill with the bat, the ball and in the field. Jos Buttler, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali will be the key play makers in tomorrow’s fixture and will hope to guide England to the final on the weekend.

What is the team news?

The biggest team news is the loss of Jason Roy for England. During Saturday’s match against South Africa, Roy ran what should have been an easy single, but was seen limping and struggling to the other end before eventually collapsing to the ground.
