England vs New Zealand result: what was the score in England’s final T20 World Cup 2021 cricket warm up match?

England played their second and final warm up match against New Zealand on Wednesday 20 October 2021 ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup.

They played their first warm-up match against India on Monday 18 October and lost by seven wickets but were able to redeem themselves earlier today by beating New Zealand by 13 runs.

What was the score in England’s first warm up match, T20 World Cup 2021?

England chose to bat first and posted what initially looked to be an impressive score of 188-5.

Eoin Morgan decided to rest himself having spent the past few weeks captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League meaning Jos Buttler led the team for Monday’s match.

Buttler, Jason Roy and Dawid Malan all posted sub-20 scores before Jonny Bairstow came to the crease and hit a 36-ball 49. Liam Livingstone showed promise of maintaining his notable summer form as he scored 30 runs off 20 balls before being bowled by Mohammed Shami, giving the Indian his third wicket of the match.

Moeen Ali carried on his imposing T20 scoring rate by smashing 43 off 20, scoring four fours and two sixes.

Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers taking three wickets for 40 runs.

Ishan Kishan was India’s best batter scoring 70 off 46 balls while KL Rahul supported him making 51 off 24. David Willey, Mark Wood and Livingstone all picked up a wicket each but were not able to slow the run rate of the Indian batters.

After dropping Kishan out in the field, Livingstone walked off the pitch with an injured finger that England feared would potentially rule him out, however he was given the all clear on Tuesday and played in the second warm up match against New Zealand.

What was the score in England’s second warm up match against New Zealand, T20 World Cup 2021?

Morgan returned to captain his squad while Moeen was rested. Roy and Buttler opened the batting again, however Roy was bowled by Tim Southee in the very first ball of the match. Buttler went on to top-score hitting 73 off 51 balls including 11 fours and two sixes.

Malan and Morgan made 11 and 10 respectively before Bairstow came out and scored 30 off 21, hitting two sixes.

Livingstone may have done well to have rested this match after his injury scare on Monday as he only scored one before being bowled by Glen Phillips. Sam Billings was brought into the squad and hit 27 off 17 helping England post a score of 163.

New Zealand spin bowler Ish Sodhi was on top form taking three wickets for 26 runs while Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Phillips all picked up one each.

New Zealand came out to bat and opener Martin Guptill hit 41 off 20 balls. Sodhi was the next top scorer making 25 off his 16 balls. Mark Wood did the most damage out of the England bowlers taking the wickets of Tim Seifert, Daryl Mitchell, Southee and Kyle Jamieson.

Adil Rashid also impressed with the ball taking Guptill’s wicket, Mitchell Santner and Mark Chapman’s as well.

Livingstone and Chris Woakes took a wicket each but it was Wood and Rashid who were the dominant forces in being able to tear through the New Zealand line up and bowl the opposition out for 150.

Eoin Morgan has spoken out saying that if necessary, he will drop himself for the benefit of his team. He has only scored 82 runs at an average of 11.71 in seven Twenty20 innings for England this year and averaged only 11.80 at the IPL.

Speaking after the first warm up match, Morgan said “I will not stand in the way of the team winning the World Cup. I’ve been short of runs but my captaincy has been pretty good.”

When asked whether he would be prepared to drop himself he replied “That is always an option.”

When is England’s next match in T20 World Cup 2021?

England’s first competitive match takes place on Saturday 23 October 2021 and they will play the current T20 champions West Indies. The match will be held at the Dubai International Stadium.
