Manchester United academy star returns to Old Trafford - two decades after he left
Rowe, originally on Manchester United's roster as a teenager, departed in 2003 to join Stockport County, making his senior debut there four years later. Born in Wythenshawe, the midfielder has since played more than 500 games in the Football League (EFL) including stints in the Championship with Peterborough, Wolves, and Bristol City. His most recent club was Doncaster Rovers, with his contract ending in June.
Following his exit from Doncaster, Rowe featured for United's under-21 side during a pre-season trial. Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy rules permit up to five “over-age” players in under-21 matches, a role previously filled by Tom Huddlestone last season.

Hide AdHuddlestone has since left Manchester United for a full-time coaching position with Wigan Athletic, while Paul McShane - who previously held a similar player-coach role - transitioned to a coaching-only role after retiring from playing in 2022. Both Huddlestone and McShane had appearances for the under-21s but did not feature in the first team.
Rowe, 35, made his Premier League 2 debut last month, and Manchester United have now officially confirmed his signing. Announcing Rowe's arrival, the club said: "The experienced midfielder will create various unique development opportunities for United’s Academy players by coaching from within training sessions and driving daily standards on and off the pitch."
Rowe has played the full 90 minutes in under-21 matches against Arsenal, Stoke, and Blackburn since joining.
