The Principality Stadium could be in line to welcome back the Welsh national football team, as well as potentially hosting a major WWE event.

For the past decade, the Cardiff City Stadium has been the regular home of Welsh football.

Before that ground was erected in 2009, however, the Principality Stadium held matches, though crowds were sparse and it was deemed that national team games were better suited to smaller stadia.

Newly-appointed FAW CEO Noel Mooney is open to the idea of a return to a ground which could house up to 74,500 spectators, though.

"It’s something we could well do. Why not?" said Mooney to the Press Association on the matter.

"We have an agreement with Cardiff City Stadium and everyone really likes going there.

"But we’ll actually speak to the Welsh Rugby Union late next week. Absolutely we’re in discussions with them."

In October 2018, Wales played a friendly match against Spain at the Prinicipality, losing 4-1 to Spain in front of 50,232 fans.

Opponents of a similar ilk as Spain will be lining up against the Welsh next year after their promotion to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League.

EURO 2020 winners Italy, World Cup winners France, as well as the likes of Germany and England could all come to town and with plenty of stars in their ranks, there will be a clamour to see the best players strutting their stuff.

Rob Page’s side are also consigned to a play-off spot for the 2022 World Cup so there could be a demand from the public to see them qualify for the tournament for a first time since 1958.

"It’s just to make sure that if a match comes, that, for whatever reason, Cardiff City Stadium is not available," he added.

"Or if there’s a real big feeling that people want to go to the Principality Stadium."

And it’s not just football events that could be held at the stadium, with strong rumours that World Wrestling Entertainment are considering hosting a major pay-per-view event in Cardiff in the future.

A report from talkSPORT says that the global phenomenon in sports and entertainment are exploring hosting their ‘SummerSlam’ event in the Welsh capital.

The Principality’s Stadium retractable roof is a stand-out feature to decision makers and it’s previous success with boxing events, such as Anthony Joshua’s fight against Carlos Takam in 2017, puts it in good stead.

The last time a stadium show was held in the United Kingdom was Summerslam in 1992, in which Bret Hart and the British Bulldog headlined.

It is understood that the Principality is currently a preferred venue, although nothing has been finalised at this stage.
