Sandro Tonali: 'Homesick' Italian footballer touted with a move from Newcastle United to Liverpool
Ordinarily, when you are feeling homesick, the best port of call is to head back to your roots.
Whether it’s the family household you grew up in, your home town or even just cooking a meal that takes you back to your childhood, there genuinely is no place like home.
According to reports, Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali is feeling like this at the moment. The Newcastle United star moved to Tyneside in 2023 for an undisclosed fee, on a five-year contract.
In October that year, he was banned for 10 months for breaching Italian gambling regulations during his time at AC Milan. Since returning, he has propelled the Magpies to the Champions League and helped them win the Carabao Cup last season.
Despite all this, the 25-year-old has still been touted with a move away from St James’ Park, with Juventus showing interest last summer.
But now, Football365 has suggested that, in lieu of options he has previously turned down, the Italian could move to Premier League rivals Liverpool instead.
Writing for the sports outlet, Will Ford said: “Short of interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, maybe Paris Saint-Germain, the English top flight sides may be Tonali’s only recourse, with Liverpool very possibly, gloriously, chief among his suitors as they look to source a replacement or competition for Alexis Mac Allister at the heart of their fallible midfield.”
Tonali, who recently signed a new contract at Newcastle, has been coy on precisely how long he’ll stick around at the club.
He said: “Footballers need to think year by year. I don’t want to say I want to stay here ten years and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go.
“If you have an option for your life, for another team, you need to think about everything in football.”
