Who can England draw in the World Cup? The dream and nightmare possible scenarios ahead of today’s group draw

After England qualified for the 2022 World Cup in November, fans are now eagerly awaiting the draw to find out who they will be facing in the group stages.

Ahead of the Qatar tournament this winter, the DECC venue in Doha will host the World Cup draw today.

It will begin at 5pm BST and you can follow live coverage on Sky Sports.

We already know 29 of the 32 participants, with the final three places to be decided in the intercontinental playoffs in June, as well as the final European playoff final which has been delayed due to the Ukraine-Russia crisis.

England will be drawn from Pot One, meaning they won’t be able to face Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, Spain or Portugal.

Meanwhile, the other three pots could offer him a rather straightforward route to the knockout stage or prove to be a very difficult group.

Best case scenario

Switzerland, Mexico and USA could prove to be favourable draws for England.

Uruguay are the lowest ranked team by FIFA in Pot Two, however the potential tie brings bad memories after the Three Lions’ terrible 2014 World Cup campaign in which they were defeated by a Luis Suarez brace.

Tunisia or South Korea are the teams Gareth Southgate’s side will be hopeful of drawing from Pot Three, as well as Saudi Arabia from Pot Four.

The possibility of United Arab Emirates or new Zealand qualifying through the play-offs could also be promising.

Worst case scenario

Despite knocking Germany out of the Euro tournament last summer, England will be eager to avoid Hansi Flick’s side in tomorrow’s draw.

Pot Three could potentially see them draw the current AFCON champions, Senegal, who would put them up against the likes of Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy.

All of Pot Four’s teams should be beatable for England, however the likes of Cameroon and Peru could prove to be challenging.

The latter finished fourth in last year’s Copa America tournament.
