The Great North Run 2022 ballot is now open!

No fewer than 57,000 determined and dedicated entrants will embark on Newcastle over a weekend for one of the most popular events of the running calendar.

Billed as the world’s "biggest and best half marathon", organisers welcomed runners back to the streets of Newcastle to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the race a year on from when initially planned.

The Great North Run is more than 13.1 miles, and has become renowned for its friendly atmosphere, encouraging crowds and raising funds for worthwhile causes.

Here’s a look at when the Great North Run will take place in 2022 now the ballot is open.

In 2022, the Great North Run is scheduled to take place on Sunday 11 September.

How long is the Great North Run?

The Great North Run is known in the running universe as the UK’s largest half marathon event.

The race itself is 13.1 miles in distance - half the distance of a full marathon, which is 26.2 miles.

The route starts in Newcastle, crosses over the River Tyne and into Gateshead before continuing past South Tyneside and finishing by the sea at South Shields.

How to enter the Great North Run 2022

Entering the ballot of the 2022 Great North Run gives you the chance to compete in the race on Sunday 11 September, alongside thousands of other entrants and cheering spectators.

The ballot opened on Monday 10 January 2022 and will close at 9am on Monday 21 February.

The ballot will be drawn later that same day and all entrants to the ballot will be notified by email if they have been successful or not by Friday 25 February.

All successful entrants will receive an entrance pack which includes a free training plan and finishers will receive a bespoke finishers' medal, exclusive t-shirt and goodie bag, as well as bragging rights as a GNR!
