The Masters Golf Tournament 2022 concluded with Scottie Scheffler winning his first major Golf competition, taking home the prestigious Green Jacket after beating his rivals with 10-under par.

The American 25-year-old overcame a last hole wobble to keep his cool and solidify his place as one of the Sport’s real danger men.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy came in second after a phenomenal comeback on the last day but it was not enough to overcome the stability and patience of Scheffler.

The 32-year-old from County Down had initially said his target for Sunday’s finale was ending in the top 10 for a seventh time at the Augusta but McIlroy was in fact close to completing one of the biggest final-round comebacks since Paul Lawrie at the 1999 Open Championship.

What happened on Rory McIlroy’s final day at Masters?

McIlroy started 10 shots behind first-place Scheffler on the final day and after birdies on the first and third hole, the Northern Irishman’s confidence began to grow.

Three more birdies came on the seventh, eight and tenth, pushing McIlroy up into joint third place.

On the 13th hole, McIlroy converted an eagle putt on the par-five, putting him seventh under for the day and on the way to a course record of 63.

He then rescued pars on 14 and 15, with two more pars on 16th and 17th holes, but by now the course record was out of reach.

Nick Price in 1986 and Greg Norman 1996 remain the holders of the course record after McIlroy’s 64.

However, McIlroy’s greatest highlight on the course was yet to come. The 32-year-old splashed out from the bunker on the right of the green and holed for a birdie.

Next came some of the most dramatic celebrations ever seen by the four-time major Champion.

While there was a slim chance that McIlroy would be able to win all four men’s majors, the final-day charge was too late and Scheffler remained on top.

How much did Rory McIlroy earn at the Masters 2022?

The runner-up of the Masters Golf Major is set to take home $1.6 million (around £1.2milion).

Scottie Scheffler will take home $2.7 million (£2m) after coming first in the tournament.

The total prize fund for the competition is around £11.4m.

McIlroy is married to the American socialite, Erica Stoll, but McIlroy’s earnings have come as a result of spending more than 100 weeks as the number-one ranked professional golfer in the world.

The Sunday Times Rich List reported back in May 2020 that McIlroy has earned an astonishing net worth of around £169 million.

Much of this can be traced back to individual wins, such as the Northern Irishman winning around £32 million in prize money from his 14 victories on the PGA European Tour alone.

On the European Tour in 2011, McIlroy became the youngest player to ever reach just over £8 million in prize money.

What has Rory McIlroy spent his money on?

McIlroy previously spent just over £25million on a private jet but has now spent an undisclosed amount off-setting his carbon footprint after consulting with the GEO Foundation.

Speaking ahead of the DP World Championship in Dubai, McIlroy said: “Two years ago, after I won in China, I flew back home privately, and it was just me on the plane. And I just got this massive sense of guilt coming over me just because this can’t be good (for the environment).

“I wouldn’t profess to be an eco-warrior, but I’m someone that doesn’t want to damage the environment, so I was looking at ways to make my travel around the world carbon neutral. So we ended up reaching out to the GEO Foundation, which does a lot of great sustainability work in golf, to help us go in the right direction.”
