England and Ireland come into the competition on the back of strong Autumn Nations series wins while Scotland will also expected to make waves.

As for Italy, the perennial underdogs are looking to win a match at the tournament for the first time since 2015 after years of miserable defeats.

Excitement and buzz for the tournament has increased even more for many England fans today (Tuesday 18 January 2022) as Eddie Jones announced his squad with Owen Farrell returning to his role as captain.

Farrell has now played 100 Tests for England but has not played any rugby since suffering an ankle injury during England’s Autumn nations match against Australia in November.

Ireland are hot on the tails of the pair while Wales and Scotland are some way back and Italy sit bottom of the list with astronomically long odds.

The pre-tournament odds (via Betfair) are:

  • France - 6/4
  • England - 11/4
  • Ireland - 3/1
  • Wales - 7/1
  • Scotland -12/1
  • Italy - 500/1

The bookies don’t fancy there to be a Grand Slam winner this year, with odds of 4/6 on suggesting they think it most likely that no team will win all five of their matches.

However, France are also the most favoured to do so and can be backed at 3/1.
