The inaugural The Hundred competition was a roaring success when it hit our screens and local cricket grounds last summer and it is back to preoccupy us this August once again.

James Vince’s Southern Brave took home the men’s trophy while South Africa’s Dane van Niekerk led the women’s Oval Invincibles to success.

Last year’s tournament had some truly spectacular cricket, with India’s Jemimah Rodrigues reaching new found fame as she earned herself the second highest run scorer in the female tournaments, while Tymal Mills and Liam Livingstone secure themselves England call-ups for the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup as a result of their phenomenal efforts for Southern Brave and Birmingham Phoenix respectively.

This year, there are sure to be many more exciting moments to watch out for and after the conclusion of the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand last weekend, cricket fans can now turn their attention to The Hundred draft as they wait in anticipation to find out which England and international stars will join their city-based franchise.

How does the draft work?

There have been two stages to this draft. The first stage took place in February and was the England player allocation and Play Retention Window.

Go to our article on The Hundred Retained players to find out who is staying with their franchise from 2021 into 2022.

This current draft is for remaining players who have signed themselves up for the tournament.

Selections will take place in a draw order and each team will take it in turns to fill in gaps in each of their salary bands.

Each player who enters the draft will have a reserve price and they cannot be bought for less than this.

If a team wishes, they can spend more than a player’s reserve price on them.

The draw order is:

  1. London Spirit
  2. Welsh Fire
  3. Manchester Originals
  4. Northern Superchargers
  5. Oval Invincibles
  6. Trent Rockets
  7. Birmingham Phoenix
  8. Southern Brave

There is then one final part of the whole process. Once The Hundred draft has taken place, each team can then make two more picks.

One of these is the Vitality Wildcard and this allows franchises to pick an additional player closer to the time of the tournament.
