Edinburgh Airport suspended flights due to a “small breakup” on the runway

Flights have been suspended at Edinburgh Airport this morning (Thursday 9 May) due to a runway emergency, leaving passengers facing travel chaos. Edinburgh Airport bosses said teams carried out repairs on a "small breakup" on the runway.

This has led to huge delays to flights with many aircraft circling the capital waiting to land. FlightRadar also showed Ryanair, EasyJet, Qatar Airways and Air Canada flights waiting on the runway for permission to take off.

Edinburgh Airport said on X, formerly Twitter, that repairs were being carried out on the runway and thanked passengers for their patience. A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: "Arrivals and departures were suspended as teams carried out repairs to a small breakup.

"The runway is approaching the end of its life with a full replacement operation planned for next year. We always prioritise safety and maintain a regular maintenance regime, and we will continue to complete works where and when required."

One passenger wrote on X this morning: “Stationary on a delayed flight to Luton, Edinburgh airport runway is closed. The air conditioning is broken (prob not an issue for most but I am 49 and always ROASTING). Imagine my joy that my fellow passenger in row 22 is laughing out loud at the book she’s reading.”

The airport confirmed on X that the runway is “now operational again”.
