Europe’s biggest hidden gem city break - a sun-soaked destination with flights for just £44

Europe’s biggest hidden gem has been revealed in a new ranking analysing more than 74,000 Tripadvisor reviews across 30 city destinations.

It comes as Google searches for “city break” spike 38% year-on-year in February, ahead of the spring/summer booking season. The study by Ripe Motorhome Insurance compared the level of pre-arrival ‘hype’ surrounding a city with the proportion of visitor reviews that referenced disappointment because the reality wasn’t what they expected.

Marseille has been crowned Europe’s biggest hidden gem. Marseille recorded the lowest disappointment level, with just 0.32% of Tripadvisor reviews referencing underwhelm - the strongest performance of any city analysed.

This contrasts with Paris, which ranked as Europe’s most “overhyped” city break in the same study. Across all 30 destinations, the most common causes of disappointment were overcrowding, higher-than-expected costs and experiences that failed to match glossy social media imagery.
